Driving - Map the Trip
For uniformed and civilian government employees, if you choose to drive keep in mind the following -
-
If you are on TDY orders, government reimbursement is usually limited to the cost of air fare. You will probably have to take leave if it will take you more than one day to drive.
- If you are on a longer TDY or PCS move, you are usually entitled to shipment of several hundred pounds of "hold baggage." You can pack and move your "hold baggage" yourself in your POV and/or small trailer. See DityMovers.com. Depending on your weight allowance and distance, you may make as much as $1,500.
Flying
-
Tucson International Airport (TUS). Tucson is the closest airport to Fort Huachuca with regularly scheduled commercial flights. TUS does have a USO lounge, rental cars, and shuttle bus service to Ft Huachuca. It is about an hour’s drive (69 miles) to Sierra Vista (directions). Fill up on food and gas before leaving Tucson. There is none for 30 miles.
-
Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). Phoenix is a major airport with hundreds of daily flights. PHX has a USO lounge in Terminal 2, rental cars, and private shuttle bus service. If you have a layover of 2 hours or more in Phoenix, it may actually be cheaper and quicker to fly directly into PHX and drive to Ft. Huachuca. It is about a 3-hour drive (184 miles) to Sierra Vista (directions).
- Sierra Vista Municipal Airport (FHU). Currently, there is no regularly scheduled commercial air service into or out of Sierra Vista Municipal Airport. The airport is open to private and chartered flights (FAA info).
Renting A Car
-
At the airport - You can rent a car at either the Tucson airport or the Phoenix airport. The advantages of renting a car at the airport are selection and convenience. You can pick up and drop off the car at the airport. The disadvantage is if you have problems you have to drive all the way back to the airport to solve them. Renting at the airport is probably the better choice for rentals of less than 30 days. It is about an hour’s drive (69 miles) from Tucson (directions) and about a 3-hour drive (184 miles) from Phoenix (directions). Fill up on food and gas before leaving town as there is not much between towns.
-
In Sierra Vista - You can rent cars in Sierra Vista. There are only two car rental companies in town. The disadvantage of renting in town is you have to get from the airport to Sierra Vista. The advantage of renting in town is if you have any problems, you don’t have to waste half a day or more dealing with them. Also, for longer rentals you will have to turn the car back in every so often for service. Therefore, renting in town is probably the better choice for rentals of more than 30 days.
